CA SB 905 – Carbon Sequestration: Carbon Capture, Removal, Utilization, and Storage Program

Project 2030 conceived of and sponsored SB 905 to advance California’s geologic sequestration infrastructure and expedite the California’s transition to a negative emissions economy. SB 905 provides a replicable model of how to build this infrastructure and address the legitimate concerns of local communities located near carbon capture, sequestration and removal projects.

SB 905 was introduced in February 2022 by Senator Skinner. The bill passed the Senate in May and passed without opposition in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee in June. SB 905 was included in the Governor Newsom’s Climate Package in late August. The bill passed with super majorities in the Assembly and Senate on August 31, 2022.

More work is needed to advance carbon dioxide removal. Project 2030 will continue its work to achieve California’s climate goals while ensuring that local community voices and priorities are at the heart of our negative emissions economy.
